What were the other options for your team’s name?  If there was only ever the one option for your name, what is the origin of your team’s name?

One name that we were really close to choosing was Water Goblins.

What word/phrase is most often heard when your team is working on your ROV?

We’ve had a lot of different conversations and phrases heard between us or shouted across the room such as: “Why doesn’t it work!” “I’m hungry” “Ananya, get off tik tok!” but the one that we’ve heard almost every time we meet is “We’ll finish it next practice.”

Which job or thing your team has to do is the hardest? Why?

We believe at least, between our team that all of our jobs have different components and aspects and are equally difficult. However, as a team our hardest task is defending the snacks that we’ve brought in from other after-school programs!

What is your team's go-to snack food(s)?

Though we usually ate whatever we found in the black cupboard in the back of the room, we all agreed that nothing can compare to Sheryl’s homemade brownies.

What was the most celebrated/happiest/best/epic moment of success making your ROV?

There were a few epic moments in our team. One was when we finally printed out the wings of the chassis. Another was when, after a lot of arduous trial and error, our ROV motors finally worked.

What was your most memorable challenge/complete fail in building your ROV?

Of course, setting the fathom S on fire was one of the most memorable fails as it started smoking and we were afraid it would completely catch on fire. Another one was when we dropped a weight into the pool drain. We then had to spend 10 minutes leaning over the side trying to maneuver with 10 foot long poles and various equipment before we could get it out.

What "theme" – the scientific or physical problem to be addressed with an ROV task – would you most like to see included in future competition missions?

We would really like the theme of unclean oceans to be included in future competitions as we feel that microplastics and ocean pollution are a growing problem. We would also like to address sea level rises and melting sea ice, and problems it causes for the ocean ecosystem. We would really like if more computer vision and software intensive challenges should be included.

What innovation do you think would completely change how ROVs solve problems in the future?

We think a good tetherless connection could really change how ROV’s solve problems. The solution to that would be batteries with a longer life. They would allow the ROV to travel deep underwater without being tethered or constrained. This would enable the ROV to travel to deeper areas and further away without being worried about the tether.

If you could swap ROVs with any team – past or present – what team would it be?

Most of us agreed that we would love our ROV to be as amazing as our school’s Ranger class teams.

If your team had/has one, what is your team’s “theme song”?

If we had to pick a theme song, it would be the melodious beep sequence of the T100.
