HMS SeaBots is an inherited ROV team name from a Harrington Middle School STEM class ten years ago.
What word/phrase is most often heard when your team is working on your ROV?
Don't be "lame and weak"!
Which job or thing your team has to do is the hardest? Why?
The shrouds...When we first designed our shrouds, we did our CAD on a teammate's personal computer because it was easier to use than our school computers. It took us weeks to finish our design because we didn't always have access to this computer. This wasted a great deal of time. After finally finishing the design, we then had a hard time sharing the CAD to a school computer because our school accounts restrict sharing with anyone outside of our district.
What is your team's go-to snack food(s)?
Takis: Hot Chili Pepper and Lime
What was the most celebrated/happiest/best/epic moment of success making your ROV?
Our mechanical engineers most epic moment was when our motor shrouds 3-D printed correctly, and fit our motors perfectly. Another cool moment was when the electrical engineers’ control board lit up when given power for the first time.
What was your most memorable challenge/complete fail in building your ROV?
Our most epic fail was with a shroud miscalculation while 3-D printing. After making some modifications, we accidentally pressed “print to scale” on the 3-D printer which messed up the measurements. Poor John had to explain to Coach Barrett why we just wasted so much PLA filament!
What "theme" – the scientific or physical problem to be addressed with an ROV task – would you most like to see included in future competition missions?
One theme could be how much plastic is in the ocean. The premise of this is to find out how much plastic is in a certain area, use that information as a predictor, and do different challenges with the plastic.
What innovation do you think would completely change how ROVs solve problems in the future?
If you could swap ROVs with any team – past or present – what team would it be?
Our team would not swap ROVs with another team even if we had a choice. This is because we want the product that we present to be our own work./p>
